Review of The Edge of Seventeen (2016) by Riley N — 16 Jan 2018
The Edge of Seventeen is a coming of age teen high school movie that portrays perfectly what high school can be like for some people. This movie takes on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end touching basically every emotion on the spectrum.
The plot is brilliantly constructed and has a great story that could be very relatable for most people, maybe not the whole story but some parts could be relatable to certain people. It's incredible how this movie is so dramatic and emotional but at the same time it's so hilarious and enjoyable.
They construct the plot in a way that is so serious and can tug on the heart strings but fit in the comedy relief to perfection and when the script is trying to be funny, it is genuinely very funny. I could not praise Hailee Steinfeld enough for this performance.
One of the best of 2016 in my opinion she was born to play this role and really used that to her advantage. She showed everyone how much acting chops she really has and that she is ready to play huge roles in hollywood for dramas or comedies really.
There are so many great performances in this movie, Haley Lu Richardson is very good in her role, Blake Jenner is great as the big brother character, Kyra Sedgwick is perfect in her role as the mother that always wants to be in control and just can't let her little girl grow up and let her be free, I was very impressed by these 3 they were very good even if their performances weren't huge highlights in the film.
Another performance worth mentioning even if it wasn't a highlight was Hayden Szeto as Erwin, I loved his character and how shy and awkward he was and transformed into a more confident character. But one performance was above the rest and that was Woody Harrelson as the teacher, holy was this performance ever memorable, I really thought he deserved the Oscar for best supporting actor for this role in this movie.
He was the perfect type of sarcastic character that wasn't too over did so that he wasn't likable. The way he was kind of a jerk sarcastic teacher at school and how throughout the movie you saw how great of a guy he was and how he really cared for Nadine and really wanted to help people was amazing to watch.
The themes in this movie are also very thought provoking and important to remember and this movie delivers them perfectly, Overall the plot was very well written, with a few Oscar nomination worthy performances and some other very good performances as well, and some important themes.
This film was intriguing from beginning to end making the audience become emotional and tear up and also make them tear up from laughing to hard. A perfect movie and one the best experiences you can have while watching a movie.
