Review of The Edge of Seventeen (2016) by Katv M — 19 Nov 2016
Had high expectations, the movie fell a bit below them. Some positives: the acting was great, and even though I don't like Hailee Steinfeld for my own stupid reasons, I will say she was excellent in this movie.
"The Edge of Seventeen" totally is realistic when it comes to portraying what life is like for a high-school aged girl in 2016, as other reviews have stated. And there were definitely relatable, funny, and touching parts of the movie as promised in the ads.
My main problem was with the storyline itself-- there was a lot of build up and then they gave us an anti-climactic, unrealistic, un-earned, if you will, and poorly done ending. The main character describes herself as painfully, extremely awkward but she really just seemed like the average high school kid in terms of social skills.
There were some unrealistic details, some unexplained details that only drew away slightly from the movie as a whole. That's really all I have to say, but I will add some extremely small, insignificant things that annoyed me here at the end of my review that you don't have to read if you don't care: the main character implies at one point that taking an antidepressant (you know, without being on it for at least a couple months at a therapeutic dose) will make her feel better in an hour and some characters use a couple of slurs.
Thanks for reading.
