Review of The Edge (1997) by Brady P — 17 May 2010
3: I've always liked this picture. It's one of those films I actually remember seeing in the theater when I was a kid (Maplewood). It isn't quite the same now as it was then, but I still enjoy it.
There aren't that many films around that are set in the wilderness. The sequences involving the bear are great. It's something I've definitely envisioned out there on the trails as well. The bush planes, lodge, remote cabins, etc all seem right.
The locations are really what make the picture work for me. I only wish there were more like it. Few trips are this exciting in real life, but this one doesn't take it too far either. Most everything seems fairly possible.
The only aspect of the film that does seem a little ridiculous is the fact that Hopkins' character seems to think Baldwin's is planning on killing him even before they end up lost in the wild.
Hopkins is great as always. It's not the kind of character one would easily forget either. He certainly knows how to play a rich and intelligent man, as do many other actors of course, but none are quite like him.
The rest of the cast works as well.
