Review of The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) by Rj M — 03 Jan 2009
Talk about a movie that is better than it had any right to be. A guilty pleasure of the first order. From the Broken Lizzard team that gave us classics like "Super Troopers" and "Club Dread" is this adaptation of the cheesy tv show from the 80's.
Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott make a great team as the Duke boys, and the good time they are obviously having is contagious. Burt Reynolds is perfectly slimy as Boss Hogg, and seems to be enjoying poking fun at his own good ol' boy image.
Jessica Simpson....oh my...Jessica Simpson. Her performance isn't at all the disaster it could have been. She has a natural charm, and puts it to full use. But her looks....dear God her looks. A gorgeous woman that has never looked hotter, and makes Dasiy Dukes (her tighter than tigh shorts) seem like a gift from God.
Be warned of her appearance in a bikini...your tv might just catch fire. Aside from the acting what really elevates this movie beyond expectations is the action, and the use of real cars in favor of cgi.
The racing sequences are first rate, and provide some fun and exciting action scenes, worthy of a big budget action movie. The use of classic southernn rock songs completes the feel. So many tv adaptations are total and complete garbage.
Most critics dismissed this movie as just that. But it's a good, empty headed time, and TONS of fun.
