Review of The Duke of Burgundy (2015) by Mark C — 02 May 2015
8.1/10.
The style of the movie and everything was visual was extremely beautiful and resonates with director Peter Strickland. It really gives the movie a different mood and sets it in its own world. The story was quite different from what I expected from the trailer, but still it was a pretty real and accurate depiction of a relationship that isn't on its best moment. Even with all the crazy fetishes the cataract era have, it comes to a point that their relationship and story goes way over that and you get to really know them beyond the surface. It really is a movie that has more substance than most of its type, and although in the beginning it wasn't as compelling or interesting, as the story progresses you really get involve with the charters and their complicated life. Thus, the performances were really good and were essential for the movie, Sidse Babett Knudsen was excellent as the more mature partner and really showcases her tiredness and somewhat frustration in what was an amazing performance, while Chiara D'Anna was also extremely good as the more unstable younger partner that has some strange fetishes. Overall, it wasn't quite what I was expecting in story wise, but still I really liked and it really left me at the end wanting more from them, because of how fascinating the characters and the performances were.
