Review of The DUFF (2015) by James P — 11 May 2015
Really desperate to be a "John Hughes" level film but gets too much wrong to be convincing.
My main issue: unlike films like "Angus" where a character deemed "unnatractive" in the movie universe they exist in actually is NOT attractive... The main character in this film is not actually ugly at all. She was, at her worst, cute, and since that seemed to be a large part of what was needed to convince me to feel bad for them, I had a hard time empathizing with that character on anything else.
The chemistry between her and the main guy was super obvious too even from the beginning. You know almost immediately that he was going to be the "Freddie Prince" to her "She's All That.".
