Review of The DUFF (2015) by Anthony K — 08 Jun 2015
Not quite the Easy A/Mean Girls level of quality I was hoping for with this breezy teen comedy, but it's definitely still fun and manages to entertain despite the hoary narrative cliches it must adhere to.
The differentiators are 1) star power and 2) a great script. Mae Whitman is a witty, genuinely funny, and magnetic lead - almost Seth Rogen-esque in the best way possible. The male lead, too, delivers snappy lines well, and is reminiscent of a young Tom Cruise (it's all in the eyebrows).
There's a bit much in the way of app name-checking, and the conclusion is disappointingly predictable, but overall I'd say this is worth watching.
