Review of The DUFF (2015) by Daniel R — 23 Jun 2015
About five to ten minutes into this film, you know exactly what is going to happen because you've seen it a thousand times before. But what makes this movie a completely charming and enjoyable romp is the amazing chemistry between Whitman (Bianca) and Arnell (Wesley) who should make a dozen more movies together. You buy their relationship from the get-go and both ooze charm and humor. The casting of this movie is top-notch as every character that appears on screen feels real and not cliched - even when they are playing a stereotype.
The other surprise of the movie is an eye-opening look at how today's kids can be victimized by cyber-bullying. Whitman has a powerfully poignant moment when she has to escape the school hallways to hide in the bathroom after a schoolmate posts an unflattering edited video of Bianca and Wesley clowning around in a clothing store. The growth she shows by the end of the movie when threatened with the posting of another video is worthy of applause. This is a delightful movie that you should watch no matter your age.
