The Duff is a fun teen comedy film that Mae Whitman gives an outshining performance as an awkward teenager. The Duff is an entertaining fun high school teen film with a plot that does use that similar territory like 1999 Sheâ(TM)s All That. Basically, a story about an awkward smart teen Bianca Piper (Mae Whitman) who needs help from a jock Wes (Robbie Amell) to help her fit in and go on a date with her high school crush. The Duff does add a new mix to a predictable story by a concept like Duff (designated, ugly, fat, friend). A new addition to the high school students labeling like jocks, geeks, ect.

Bianca is an intelligent awkward senior student, who has two best friends Jess (Skyler Samuels) and Casey (Bianca Santos) that they both are more popular than she is. She has a neighbor, she knew since she was little and is now a high school football player jock Wes. Bianca discovers the idea of a duff and realizes she fits the description, which she is the gatekeeper to her friends getting hit on by the guys. Wes tries to help Bianca get out of her comfort zone to finding a date with her crush. Wes ex girlfriend Madison (Bella Thorne) tries to set up a humiliating plan to put Bianca on the spotlight.

Mae Whitman is charming and sweet; it is difficult seeing her play an awkward character that gets treated horribly in the movie. Robbie Amell plays a fun arrogant jock character. Bella Thorne playing an annoying self-centered drama queen.

The Duff is a lot of fun for a teen high school movie, Mae Whitman and Robbie Amell were both great, and the movie does have a lot of fun humor. It is freshly entertaining and a surprise hit to being a good one.
