Review of The DUFF (2015) by Valerie C — 27 Jun 2015
This one actually turned out to be a bit better than I was expecting. Bianca Piper (Mae Whitman) has been best friends with Jess (Skylar Samuels) and Casey (Bianca Santos) since they were little. Jess and Casey are popular, pretty and have some really great skill whether it be fashion, or computer hacking that seems ot attract people toward them.
Bianca on the other hand is not popular at all and doesn't quite stand out. At a school party Wes (Robbie Amell) a boy that Bianca has known her whole life, explains to Bianca that she is a DUFF (designated ugly fat friend).
You don't actually have to be ugly or fat though it's just a saying. The DUFF is a person who is the approachable friend that others come to talk to to get information about their hotter friends.
Bianca is horrified by this and the film follows her journey in becoming a different image, but overall the message is about embracing who you are and finding yourself. The movie has some funny moments, but for the most part it actually has that good message of being who you are and not becoming someone to perform to someone else's standards.
I felt the movie was a bit predictable though and its aimed for a younger crowd than myself, but overall it's a pretty good rent!
