Review of The DUFF (2015) by Trevor W — 02 Mar 2015
A high school teen movie that takes all of the typical high school teen movie clichés and... well... uses them. There are a total of zero surprises here; you've seen this movie before. It updates these clichés through usage of current social media websites and cyber bullying, but nothing we haven't seen through the usage of fliers and diaries in other similar films. Basically, this film has about a maximum of five years before becoming outdated.
However, this typical movie is saved by the superb performance by Mae Whitman. She rocks every aspect of her character. She jumps from being a total goof to a teen with great struggles with self. Also, Allison Janney and Ken Jeong make appearances as a mom and teacher, respectively, and unsurprisingly steal every scene they are in. Robbie Amell also makes a surprisingly deep performance, but if you see this movie, see it for Whitman. The acting in this film is the home-made icing on the store-bought cake.
