Review of The Drop (2006) by Ben B — 20 Sep 2014
'The Drop' is a crime thriller that relies on silent tension and an excellently understated performance from Tom Hardy as Bob, the bartender thrust in the middle of a robbery scheme. Bob works with his cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), whose bar is what is called a 'drop bar,' a place where mob revenue is collected and later distributed back to the group's businesses.
Marv gets himself involved in a scheme which would take some of the Chechen mob's money but things don't go as smoothly as planned. As a witness to this crime, Bob no longer has safety as a luxury.
He cannot even begin to know Nadia (Noomi Rapace), a woman he meets by chance, without her being connected to the crimes as well. Tom Hardy continues his hot streak of great performances and is seriously rising in my personal stock as well.
He really is becoming someone I would see a movie for. James Gandolfini fits the glove of this film perfectly and in one of his last roles, he goes out with a bang. Audiences will see why he is so excellent in roles like this.
