Review of The Drop (2006) by Christian W — 21 Feb 2015
A crime drama film that shows Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, and Noomi Rapace giving worthy performances in a dull boring script. Dennis Lehane script just offers a dull blank story about a bartender Bob (Tom Hardy) and the owner of the bar Marv (James Gandolfini) who operates their bar as a "drop" for illegal money laundering from mobsters. Then, one night they get robbed from two masked gunmen with the money that was used in the drop. That is all there is to the story and then add a couple of twists to add more tension with the leading character. Then, a subplot of Bob finding a small pit bull injured and left in a trash can that he tries to raise while forming a friendship with Nadia (Noomi Rapace). Then, lets add Nadia's ex boyfriend who left her scarred emotionally and physically to the mix with her and Bob. Only, if the screenwriter actually knew were to handle and form a characterization that can lead the characters to somewhere.
The only good thing about the movie is the performances with Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini. Noomi Rapace was also good as well. The movie was slow moving and the script lacked in trying to even maintain a story without getting lost in the subplot but as it focuses on the conflict, the writer had no idea on were to even lead the characters. The Drop had the casts, but the movie was slow and boring.
