Review of The Drop (2006) by Matthew S — 23 Jul 2015
Michaël R. Roskam's movie is a strangely complicated story of underground crimes of Brooklyn bars. But Roskam's English speaking debut is really about three characters who become entangled in illegal money laundering.
The concern is less about "the plot" or the "entanglement" as it is on Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini and Noomi Rapace. What is going on around and to them takes a back seat to the way each of these three actors play their respective roles.
Their performances fuel the movie and give it a reason. Hardy is the true standout.
This may not be the film one would hope Roskam to deliver, but it carries a great deal of humanity and interest.
