Review of The Driller Killer (1979) by Al M — 23 Jan 2009
The Driller Killer is a bizarre blend of a punk-art aesthetic and a slasher film--sadly, these do not fuse quite as seemlessly as they could, but Ferrara still makes an entertaining film. But frankly, seeing people killed with a drill over and over again gets a bit boring.
But the exploration of artists, pretension, ego, and the effects of urban life upon the artistic psyche create a heady (if at times lackluster mixture). Filled with the music of a crappy punk band, androgyny, and punk life, it is a film worth seeing for fans of horror and exploitation, and even for fans of artsier, hardcore indpendent filmmaking.
