Review of The Double Life of Véronique (1991) by Paulo F — 06 Oct 2008
One of the most profound movie watching experiences I've ever had. Kieslowski's style makes perfect sense to me, though it is hard to put into words. I'm fascinated by this world of the metaphysical.
The feelings that unanswered mysteries provoke, leaving us with the purity of events. The world of endless coincidences that bring us together and keep us apart. Irene Jacob plays the role of Veronique/Weronika with perfection.
The cinematography focuses on the reflections, shadows, and oddly off balanced perspectives of life. The sound is mesmerizing. The final moments of the film offer a crescendo of emotion. If we've offered ourselves to play Kieslowski's game, our hearts stop beating.
And the credits roll.
