Review of The Double (2014) by Jao R — 10 Aug 2014
I don't know what to make of this film. Hours after the credits rolled, I'm still trying to figure out what it all meant. I searched the web, looked at the wikis, and they all say the same thing: different people will have different conclusions and appreciation of the movie. The very vagueness and ambiguity of the movie makes sure of that.
Unlike The Enemy however, this film doesn't have an abrupt ending that makes you say "WTF did I just watched?" The film built up slowly to its ending, and in the end, we're still left wondering "WTF was that all about?".
But it was "WTF" in a good way. It's definitely taught me that not all movies need to be tied up nice and have every holes have a rational explanation . Some can be left wanting and unexplained. I guess I'm encouraged by this. I have a lot of stories that are just gathering dust in my mind because I can never perfect them in my head. Always, there would be holes and plot holes too hard to make an explanation for. I would get stuck in a logical bind I can't get out of and that's where the story dies.
