Review of The Double (2014) by Deena Sharon C — 06 Dec 2014
I enjoyed the movie for what it was trying to convey. The darkness, loneliness, invisibility of the protagonist, Simon James and the descending course of his life, compared in sharp contrast to his doppelgänger, the cunning, shrewd, charming, and manipulative James Simon was a theme throughout the movie.
Although both characters appear to be the same person, their similarities are not recognizable to anyone else but themselves. At first, James Simon acts as a friend to Simon James and coaches him to be more confident.
The manner of Simon James' demise in the workplace becomes an intense matter and one which is eerie in its redundancy and ghostliness. Is he real? Does he matter? What differentiates him from his doppelgänger so much? The darkness of the movie, along with the view of his life from the outside and comparison to the life he could have had if he possessed different qualities makes it an interesting film.
