Review of The Doors (1991) by Dave R — 19 May 2011
Oliver stone's bio pic about jim morrison and the band the doors is entertaining but highly impressionistic. val kilmer does an amazing job as morrison (seems like johnny depp might have borrowed here when thinking about how to play jack sparrow in "pirates"... my opinion anyway). the style and techniques stone uses in this film presage his later film "natural born killers" - also present here, as in "killers" is a preoccupation with native american mysticism.
I love the doors music but never thought much of the drug culture that spawned it nor the romanticism it's infected with. I don't care much for stone's seeming nostaligia for the 60s but if you're a fan of the music and not so concerned with the actual history of the band you may enjoy this.
