Review of The Door in the Floor (2004) by Thiago Paulo D — 03 Sep 2008
Excellent, powerful movie with impressive character portrayals that stick in your heart with unmerciful realism. As a Long Islander, it was really weird seeing a film where you find that you're familiar with the locales and public transportation methods.
It adds this extra dimension of realism that I was very grateful to experience. Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors and puts on a similarly amusing performance to that of "The Dude" in The Big Lebowski, except this time with a much more callous, misguided approach to life.
Kim Basinger was phenomenally sexy as well as painfully tortured. This was probably her best role that I've ever seen. The Door in the Floor is not for those looking for something "light." It's dark, depressing, with nary an uplifting moment.
There are jabs of humor here and there that liven up the otherwise bleak "fairy tale," but for the most part you're going to be sitting with your head in your hands once the end credits begin to roll.
With that said, I loved it.
