Review of The Door in the Floor (2004) by Ola G — 22 Oct 2008
A slowpaced John Irving adaptation that brings your mind to "The Wonder Boys".
The setting is East Hampton, New York during summertime in which the lives of the famous children's book writer Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) and his wife Marion (Kim Basinger) is on the breaking point. The once solid marriage has been shattered by the death of their sons in a tragic car accident. The distance between Ted and Marion becomes wider day by day and when Teds new assistant, Eddie O'Hare, arrives the situation becomes even more complicated. Eddie becomes the katalyst that sets of a series of events that finally changes Teds and Marions lives.
There are several layers in "The Door In The Floor", but in a subtle way. There is a familiar voice and feeling in this movie as well. As said one can feel a certain kinship with "The Wonder Boys". I think Jeff Bridges glows as always. Not sure about Kim Basinger. I personally think she has lost her sparkle. Not that the part of Marion required that. Still, something is lost in Kim Basingers presence. And I was hoping for a more gripping layout in "The Door In The Floor". The colours are a bit faded and not as strong as it could have been if you ask me. Nevertheless, a reasonably well crafted movie.
