Review of The Door in the Floor (2004) by Outi I — 12 Jun 2010
Oh wow, considering that the movie only depicts the first part of the book 'A Widow for One Year', it does it in such a respectful and true way! Jeff Bridges was amazing as disgustingly abusive, manipulative and yet so lovely and bohemian Ted and Kim Basinger gave me the shivers as Marion, the woman who is unable to get over the past, unable to love her daughter and just gulfed by grief. Even Jon Foster as Eddie was perfectly balanced, on the other hand clearly intelligent, on the other awkward and only a child.
A melancholic, strange movie that I doubt will be as powerful if you haven't read the book since the future of Ruth and Marions healing so to speak gives the book a much more positive outlook than the movie in it's sadness.
