Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Joy B — 31 May 2009
Gorgeous movie, beautiful colors and a good screenplay. The fact that the inciting incident takes place off screen was an A plus to the filmmakers. Now the way the cinematography plays an important (if not the most) role in the video is touching.
The POV is perfect, you feel and you become Jean Do. Eyes, feelings, smells and sounds mix and give a very beautiful balance. I had two problems with it though, we didn't need the constant use of people crying when the POV does that since it begins.
And the flashback at the end, completely unnecessary, since we saw Jean Do's struggle, living and experience the back story didn't matter, we felt the character, we studied the character, not the justification itself.
Without these two things, the movie would've been perfect.
