Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Peter C — 20 Oct 2009
Heavily dramatized but sublime adaptation of Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoirs. Le Scaphandre et le papillon is extraordinary for having been written through hundreds of thousands of eyeblinks while Bauby was mute and paralyzed.
This film is extraordinary for adapting the memoir so effortlessly and without too much heavy handed metaphor. What makes The Diving Bell and the Butterfly successful is the direction and how it marries you to (the fictional) Bauby's consciousness.
It is impossible not to feel some degree of exaltation after the film ends, even if it's mingled with grief.
