Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Christopher D — 24 Oct 2009
This is a fascinating film, clever camera work and some fine acting genuinely make The Diving Bell an enjoyable experience. Before viewing I was apprehensive about the content of the film, after reading about Jean Do it would be easy for this film to be horrifyingly tragic or loaded with dollops of uplifting tosh.
Fortunately it is neither and succeeds in being funny, heart warming, simple and overall beautiful. The Diving Bell really shines in its depiction of Bauby's interpersonal relationships, moments of which are simple yet unforgettable.
There is very little else to say other than; if you haven't seen this movie don't delay any further. Unfortunately one of my favoured relationships in the film has to be between Bauby and his ex-wife, after doing a little research it has transpired that the film may not have been as true to life as suggested, which is a little disheartening.
However much this shouldn't take away from the quality of the film itself I felt mildly betrayed and have marked the film down accordingly. For content however this film is a comfortable four and a half stars, if not more.
