Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Dave C — 21 Jan 2012
Certainly a tough movie to watch, but also incredibly hopeful. It tells the amazing true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby who, even in the limited cocoon of a paralyzed body, finds a way to fuel what life has left him with in to something of purpose. Communicating only through blinks, he utilizes his memories, the small joys of his current reality to tell his story. And his story is beautifully told here in a fashion that also manages to give perspective to what it must be like to be given over to this sort of patient trial.
The film moves gracefully, slowly, exploring the subtle moments of a conversation held through blinking. And the captured images of his memory show the transformation from something ugly in to something beautiful and compelling.
