Review of The Discovery (2017) by Andrew P — 03 Apr 2017
What a post-credits scene, am I right!? ... *cricket*.
The Discovery gives the viewers an assortment to grapple with. The subject matter is heady and intriguing, but the delivery feels stale and the tone is unsteady. There is some gloomy beauty here (in the look and score), but even that eventually weighs things down as opposed to benefitting. Writing-wise, the script could be less lumbering, but the performances are fine and the central romance does present some welcome moments. The "big reveal" ending comes across a sloppy mess, and really shows what the majority of the movie should've honed in on instead of force feeding it all at once. Ambitious, yes, but regrettably lacking.
