Review of The Disaster Artist (2017) by James R — 02 Dec 2017

A fantastic movie about the disastrous making of the film The Room (2003). Dave Franco stars as Tommy Wiseau who along with his best friend Greg (Dave Franco) move to LA to pursue careers in acting. They soon realize that it's really hard to get into the movie business and have failure after failure.

Then one swell day Tommy decides he'll make a movie himself! Tommy writes, produces, stars and directs The Room. A movie that is literally so simple, but Tommy begins to make as complex as possible.

Choosing to buy his equipment (when everyone usually rents), making sets and not shooting outside, filming in not just 35 MM, but also HD. Soon enough Tommy begins to delve deeper and deeper in his film turning on Greg and the other workers.

The film is extremely funny. It's not even that much of a parody, but gives some insight on Tommy's life and how you can tell he really was trying. He's a guy that is very strange and unique.

The Disaster Artist does a good job of showing the process of filming and making a movie it also shows a great way of how NOT to do a movie. Franco shines as Tommy. He embodies the character and absolutely nails his characteristics and accent.

The supporting cast works well especially Seth Rogen who plauys Sandy and Paul Scheer who plays Raphael. Sandy and Raphael are the script supervisor and lighting and their constant quips are hilarious.

Overall, a solid film. I would highly recommend watching the film it's based on before watching this one because it definitely was a better payoff overall!
