Review of The Disaster Artist (2017) by Jake L — 04 Dec 2017
Having attended multiple screenings of The Room, owning a signed copy of the DVD, and having my groomsmen toss the football in tuxes, I had high hopes for this movie. I read the book in a day and couldn't stop laughing the entire time, so my hopes for this movie were even higher.
I both like and loathe James Franco as he is sometimes incredible and sometimes plain awful. This is the performance of his career. Any qualms I had with the film are nitpicky. I laughed from start to finish.
The biggest accomplishment of the film though is not the meticulous recreation of scenes from the movie or James Franco's performance, it is the humanity with which the story is treated. You sympathize with the monster Tommy Wiseau can be.
You believe how Tommy and Greg become friends. You understand why the actors didn't run off the set of the movie. This could have been a surface level homage to a cult classic, and instead it is a thoughtful character study that carries more emotional weight that I would have thought.
