Review of The Disaster Artist (2017) by Connor B — 10 Dec 2017
On its own, "The Disaster Artist" is fantastic. It's a consistently funny and entertaining look at the best worst movie ever made, "The Room". James Franco's performance as the eccentric Tommy Wiseau is easy to get lost in, and it laughs with the character instead of laughing at him.
However, and I hate to be that guy, but the book that inspired this movie is immensely better in so many ways. The movie makes Tommy and Greg Sistero (played by Dave Franco at his Dave Franco-iest)'s journey a quasi-standard, quirky Hollywood friendship, and makes the making of "The Room" seem disastrously goofy.
While that's somewhat true, the book dives much deeper into the story and contains elements that I thought would be amazing to see on screen, but alas, they didn't make it into the film. But still, it's a sensational movie, and I would adore to see a full recreation of "The Room" from Franco and friends in the future.
