Review of The Disaster Artist (2017) by Jenna I — 05 Jan 2018
What a charming tribute to a ridiculous film made by a very sincere and ridiculous person. I've seen The Room multiple times, I know the Birns and Sawyer story from the source, I've met Greg Sestero, I interviewed Tommy Wiseau once and I interviewed the guys who made Room Full Of Spoons-the banned documentary that interviews everybody who was in the film and divulges information on where Tommy came from and how he got his money. So all of the material here is incredibly familiar to me if not over saturated a decade into this insanity.
Yet I still found myself laughing out loud at The Disaster Artist - laughing both at and with the film. James Franco really inhabits Wiseau and gets his mannerisms and expressions down pact. There's a lot of great deadpan comedy beats throughout that I could easily see this film becoming its own cult reference factory in due time.
I saw this with a friend who never saw the original and he enjoyed it so I think I can go ahead and say this is a fun for the whole family kinda film. The lesson here is be nice to weirdos and that with a bottomless pit of money and a dream you can accomplish anything!!!
