Review of The Disaster Artist (2017) by R D — 19 Feb 2018
The Seth Rogan and James Franco duo are back with a new film. The disaster artist is based on Greg Sesteros book of the same name. The film follows the filming of the The Room from the perspective of Gregg played by Dave Franco. It shows us the start of a friendship between Tommy and Gregg and follows a dream to make it big in hollywood. The Disaster Artist invites us to see what ridiculous things happened on set during the making of the film and brought to light the craziness that is Tommy Wissae. If you were to watch this film I would highly recommend on watching the Room first. It's quiet easily available on youtube.
James Franco plays a great Tommy. Based on interviews I've watched and the film you can tell James Franco found his muse with this role. He is very enjoyable to watch. He's funny, tragic, herotic, and at most of the time he is mysterious. The film brought to light a lot of questions without really giving us any answers but that is one of most interesting things about Wissaue. Who is he really? Where is he from? Where does his money come from? And a load of other questions. Dave Franco is the lead of this film he did a great job as Greg considering he had to act along side his naked brother for a whole scene. I think they did a bit much with the eyebrows and facial hair for him because it seemed a bit too out there.
Although it is a comedy it is interesting how they dive into the struggles of an aspiring actor and shows us the soul crushing realities that can come with even trying to make a name for yourself. In a way this film is inspiring. You have two people with nothing to their name.. Well apart from wisaues bottomless pit of money, go out and create something that has become a cult classic film. Although it's probably not the way they wanted it to go but nevertheless they did it. The film also explores that to the end. Tommy is broken from the laughter of the audience but Gregg shows him that in the end a film is for entertainment, if they find it funny they are still enjoying the film and are being entertained by it. The way wissae is portrayed you can see the human side of him sure we see his craziness but still we get a good look on how he is as a person. I was expecting this film to be more of a, hey remember these lines but it was more than that.
In the end the film was well made and one of the best comedies I have seen all year. The audience and I were laughing the whole way through the film and I couldn't recommend it more.
