Review of The Disaster Artist (2017) by B T — 03 Jan 2018
The Disaster Artist tells the story of the making of the best-worst movie ever. This film feels like you're watching a documentary. Just cut together into a narrative. I expected this to be pure comedy, making fun of The Room, and the mysterious entity known as Tommy Wiseau.
Yes it does those things. It's a hilarious film, but it doesnt go full parody. There's a point in the film where you realize you're just watching two guys, or one man and one vampire-alien, chase their dreams and pursue their goals.
It's honestly a touching, and kind of inspiring film. Its shocking to think the story of the worst movie ever could be an inspirational one. But there's something to that film, as bad as it is, that makes it a success.
Its pointed out in the opening, but this film is still talked about and watched around the world 14 years after its release. We usually don't even remember what ever won best picture three years ago, but The Room has never been forgotten and has been celebrated for over a decade.
Tommy Wiseau, Dracula, set out to make a film and made an abomination. But the result was still the same. He still became famous, made tons of money. Its an incredible story, and the 2hrs flew by. James Franco did what you want in a great performance, where he completely becomes the character and is unrecognizable.
The entire film i'm thinking, "god, Tommy is such a lunatic" completely forgetting its Franco. The look, the voice, the mannerisms, Franco nailed it and gave an Oscar worthy performance.
However, Tommy is not human. He's an alien. He lives on a planet called Tommy's Planet, and its hard to connect to an alien. Dave Franco is the one we connect to, sympathize with, and the one we want to succeed.
The entire film pretty much rests on Dave Franco's shoulders. No he doesn't look like Greg Sestero, but he is phenomenal in the part. I also just loved seeing Seth Rogen frustrated on set everyday, and all the behind the scenes of The Room.
Tommy's antics, the cast's shock, Greg's journey....its one of the funniest, strangest, and best films of the year.
