Review of The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) by Alastair B — 29 Aug 2010
From the beginning, you can tell that "disappearance of alice creed" is going to be a character based thriller. It opens with two anonymous men kidnapping a woman. The audience knows nothing about any of the characters and as the movie progresses, you can't help but notice that it's all taking place within two rooms, the room where Alice Creed is tied up and the outside room where the kidnappers plot. Such a contained movie can only explore its characters and in that sense, this movie is nothing like say "Ransom" where much of the story was plot driven.
For the most part the character based thrills works pretty well and the movie is a nice little low budget english thriller. But I want to stress the word "little". For this movie, though very entertaining, could have been so much bigger. The exploration into its characters was surface deep and they don't explore any parts of the human condition as you would expect from a movie based on character.
In addition, the low budget makes sure that "disappearance of alice creed" won't leave you with anyy visual thrills which means, all in all, it's not a very memorable or moving movie at all. But still not bad.
