Review of The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) by Arthur P — 23 Nov 2010
The consensus is dead on with this one. The greatest part about this movie is the simplicity and the focus. There is NO ONE else in this movie except the three main characters. NO ONE. No extras, no one walking in the background, no cops, no lawyers, no one but the three main characters, and that is fantastic. This provides the ultimate focus.
No distraction makes for great acting and no room for error. Thankfully, the three actors here are brilliant. The best of the three, Martin Compston, needs a bigger nod. He is right up there with the best actors around, but gets little attention. This movie is brutal at times, but doesn't get as brutal as you think it will. In fact, the twist in the middle of the movie is one of the most unexpected ones I have seen in a long time.
The movie involves the kidnapping of a girl for ransom, but the back story of the characters, when it comes to light will leave you struggling in wonder, guessing, and usually guessing wrong all the way to the end. While its missing a little something to give it a shove beyond greatness, it's still great, and should be watched. Seek this one out.
