Review of The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) by Ike O — 22 Sep 2011
'Alice Creed' is a delightfully crafted tale of kidnap, deceit, love and betrayal, reveling in the sort of inventiveness you didn't know genre films could still do. Thankfully, independents haven't got that memo, and here we have a gutsier, more full-blooded and riveting kidnap thriller - boasting only three actors throughout - than you'd find in an overstocked Hollywood stable.
Journeyman actor Eddie Marsan invests his kidnapper with more energy and pathos and believability than one would've thought possible, stealing scenes and grabbing his chance at a 3D character with impressive gusto.
Some parts of the 3rd Act are a bit wonky, but by then it had earned a pass - any film that reminds you of a classic like 'Asphalt Jungle' in its finale merits as much.
