Review of The Dilemma (2011) by Richard R — 01 Nov 2011
I really wanted to like this movie. I like Vince Vaughan, and can tolerate Kevin James if he's kept to a supporting role. Too much Kevin is a bad thing. I can only take so much of his "hyperactive nervous fat guy" shtick. It worked for Chris Farley, but even he could wear it out. This movie starts off looking like it is going to be a little dark but still fun, and then it descends into a slow-motion dragging death spiral that isn't funny, and certainly isn't enjoyable to watch. It was actually quite painful. I can't take another Jennifer Connely role wear she plays the stressed out girlfriend. Yeah, she's pretty, but she has to bring something else to the table or I'm just bored with her. She didn't even need to be in this movie. Winona Ryder is always hit or miss. She just can't get out of her own way. Yes, Winona, you can over-act in any role and make it not funny. Altogether, I would avoid this one.
My biggest props to Vince, I have enjoyed a lot of his comedies, but this isn't one of them. He's made too many movies lately that just aren't that funny. This one could have been, but it just got too dark and too uncomfortable to keep me interested all the way through.
