Review of The Dictator (2012) by Michael M — 07 Jan 2013
Cohen seems to never play characters who are actually decent human beings, at least not at the start. Here his character is downright despicable. Executing whoever he pleases, raping teenage boys, having sex with Megan Fox, all pretty unforgivable acts. And yet, he's still strangely likable. But at the same time, it does make his ultimate happy ending and "I learned a lesson" shpeal feel a bit cheap and not quite like what this character actually deserves.
But hey, that's really not the point here. It's basically a satire of the 2000s political decade, and it's unbearably funny. Few movies have made me laugh as often and as hard as this one, and it's satire of democracy is absolutely perfect. I liked it even more than Borat, and it secures Cohen's place as the funniest man currently making movies.
