Review of The Dictator (2012) by Lewis E — 03 Feb 2014
Sacha Baron Cohen ditches the natural, pranking ordinary people format and instead does this more staged production playing a oppressive dictator. It is basically a series of sketches with him saying and doing a lot of racist, politically incorrect statements and offensive actions.
Some of the humour is shockingly funny while others are just shocking to the extent that my conscience could never allow me to laugh at it (i.e. references to rape and sex with little boys). He certainly has balls for venturing into such dangerous topics but I feel as if not enough of the jokes hit the mark to warrant it.
The scenarios are extremely stupid, sometimes in a funny way, but most of them lack any strong significance to the already weak story-line which means the whole film loses integrity through the extreme amount of silliness.
Quality dipped from 'Borat' to 'Bruno' and I'm afraid to say it's dipping still. Pick up your game Sasha.
