Review of The Devil's Tomb (2009) by Yasser H — 05 Dec 2010
Some bad movies can be savored and some bad movies can be enjoyed like a "guilty pleasure" but "The Devil's Tomb" is annoyingly bad. Soldiers are sent on a mission to rescue an anthropologist named Wesley (played by an annoying Ron Perlman) from an underground site in the desert. Turns out there's no escape and before you can say this reminds me of "Aliens" but weren't they supposed to be in space, you get mumbo jumbo about devil worshipping. I hate when characters do stupid things and then stand around waiting to be killed. Cuba Gooding has done some bad movies since his Oscar winning role in "Jerry Maguire." He seems like he's saying to himself I hope my wages are deposited in my bank because the actor plays this role like he's preparing for a shopping list. I actually felt sorry for the actress Valerie Cruz who plays a dubious scientist--how can you justify this dud on your resume.
Lots of gore, blood, gunfire, explosives, and shouting to make you think...hmmm, I'm still awake. Trying to make a viewer squirm with disgusting makeup doesn't make for good thrills. Overall, the movie looks like it was filmed in a cheap tomb. There's no logic to the plot and no characters you can care about. If "The Devil's Tomb" was an e-mail, you'd classify it as junk mail.
