Review of The Devil's Rejects (2005) by Erick F — 25 Jun 2012
This is the perfect film to me. So shoot me. It is right up there with 8 1/2 (Fellini), Apocalypse Now (Capolla), and Eyes Wide Shut (Kubrick). Just a perfect example of concept meets execution. What is Devil's Rejects' concept; 3 serial killers escaping the law and a vengeful sheriff tracking them. Simple enough right? But Rob Zombie takes you into a world that is part 70s exploitation biker flick, part Bonnie and Clyde/Badlands, mixed with a bit of his unique love of 70s. This isn't like a Tarantino movie where the entire thing feels like an ode to an entire genre, but rather this is an evolution of a genre. A genre I might add, that was thought to be dead since the 70s. Sometimes the films story arch feels acceptably familiar and then other times it takes turns that you do not expect at all. Rob Zombie's characters also rival Tarantino's for the most lovable, interesting, unique, and vile all at once. His dialogue is also extremely underrated. No one does crazy hillbillies better then Zombie. The "Free bird" ending is the icing on the cake. Excellent, excellent, movie. Good Concept, EXCELLENT EXECUTION! WATCH IT!
WARNING: While you may not need to, watch House of 1000 Corpses first to get the full effect. Even though Devil's Rejects is way better then House...
