Review of The Devil's Rejects (2005) by Dillinger P — 04 Feb 2014
In Zombies sequel to the utterly demented House of 1000 corpses, we find him ramping up the bombast from the get go. Gone are the grungy intercuts, the cliched teen protagonists and the industrial sounds by zombie himself, this time were going full speed into a wild chase, one that twists and turns and with have you at unease through most of its running time.
Rejects has us follow the bad guys this time, Baby, Otis and Captain Spaulding as they attempt to outrun the deranged and vengeful brother of Sherriff Wydell, who the Firefly family didnt quite take a shine to in House.
Its an odd choice for Zombie to have us follow and in some way sympathise with these vile killers, but its a nice touch and one I applaude him for having the guts to do, leaving Wydell to be the sick maniac chief of police who will stop at nothing to catch and torture his brothers killers.
Casting is perfect yet again, with the trio played Oustandingly by Sherri, Mosley and Haig, Forsythe also puts in a gritty performance that really drives the whole show. Although make no mistake, with the films style your under no mistake that Rob Zombie is the devil behind this wheel.
His cinematic choices and choice of desolate and grim location add even more to the immersion of this twisted tale, add in some cameos from some of the biggest horror films of yesteryear, Notably Ken Forree and you have a horror fanatics match made in heaven.
Its not all perfect though, the scripting yet again is an issue, ill agree that the trio have some fiercful and quirky lines from time to time but I cant get the feeling that zombie is trying to reach out to a younger angsty audience, which is jarring because this film is clearly for adults.
The post production reels it all back in though, the grade on the film looks amazing, you feel like your watching a horror classic, the soundtrack is perfect, notably having Free Bird as the trios final opus in the big showdown.
The editing is also pin sharp and barely gives you time to breath. As always this film was never going to be to everyones taste, its vulgar, horrific, vile, graphic and just downright uncomfortable. However if your a massive horror freak and a fan of Zombie you'll be lapping it up in all your glory!
