Review of The Devil's Rejects (2005) by Marshall O — 07 Sep 2012
Good: Violent, gritty and real compared to the cartoony feel of House of 1000 Corpses, Captain Spaulding, Sheri Moon Zombie, explores the idea of the anti hero, an interesting twist of who the antagonist is.
Bad: Still not the most complex of all movies in terms of character and plot development.
After watching Houses of 1000 Corpses I was hopeful as to what this movie could do. I was pleased with what Rob has done with this in installment. Rob became more ambitious with this movie by not sticking with the same formula and moving to a more gritty and real filming rather than cartoonish like his previous work. This film although still very violent and bloody is not close at all in terms of shocking blood and guts compared to House of 1000 Corpses, which I do not mind as the time is spent wisely doing other things. As I predicted Rob chose the most likable characters of the Firefly household to survive, which I enjoy. Captain Spaulding and Sheri Moon remain. Although in this installment Sheri does not go nude. There were many moments in the film I found myself laughing, which I love to do during a horror. This film greatly explores the idea of the antihero, and the morals switch within the film which makes it confusing who to root for. This made the film extremely interesting as the tables turn. This made the film much better for me. Although in terms of plot this is much more complex than House of 1000 Corpses it is still not too much development with characters. Overall Rob combines a mix of cleverness and gore to create a very enjoyable movie.
