Review of The Devil's Own (1997) by Charles S — 14 Jan 2007
Considering the subject matter and the potential film that could have been made, this is a real disapointment.
Attempting to show the motivations of a member of the IRA in a balanced and non judgemental way is pretty brave move, unfortunately it is handled in such a hacknayed way that it ends up falling into standard thriller fare.
As a result, you have a good guy against a mass murderer who deserves his comeuppance instead of a potentially enthralling tale that gets you thinking.
This is no fault of Harrison and Brad etc. They do fine. The plot is so cliched to the point of being laughable, which is a shame as the basic premise is pretty intriguing and there could have been a great film here instead of the disappointing mess we have here.
