Review of The Devil's Miner (2005) by Justin T — 04 Apr 2008
Basillo is a regular 14 year old kid. He teases girls at school, plays with his younger brother and has dreams of one day becoming a teacher. But Basillo is unlike other kids because he works in one of the most deadly mines in the world.
This isn't that uncommon in his native Bolivia. This is the story of Basillo and his family. It's well told. Especially interesting is the religious rituals the miners go through to convince themselves they are safe when they are nothing but.
For his lack of safety Basillo makes around $25 a month. Gotta love capitalism.
