Review of The Devil's Double (2011) by Jc E — 18 Jun 2012
Dominic Cooper (My Week with Marilyn) can play just about any role. We've seen him sing (in 'Mamma Mia'), pull the period piece (in 'The Dutchess'), and dabble in the Marvel universe (in 'Captain America: The First Avenger').
However, in this film, he's got to bring double the effort - as the title suggests. While the facts of the actual events may or may not make it into this cinematic portrayal, the majority of the film rides on Cooper's dual performances.
On one hand, he's the barbaric spoiled brat, on the other, the soldier in over his head. His performance(s) is what really keeps this film afloat. It's not that it's a bad story - regardless of how factual it is - but that it just has a little trouble finding its footing.
But if you're a fan of Cooper's, or just like a slightly off-kilter, psuedopolitical drama-thriller, this one might be worth checking out.
