Review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) by Matt W — 15 Oct 2013
It's a little hokey and creaky in places, and sometimes it's just plain silly but there is a charm to this. It's a fun time, and I did love the design and look of it.
I was never bored and that is why the rating is higher.
Al Pacino gives a highly entertaining performance as the 'man in charge', and has a great speech at the end that completely defines 'chewing up the scenery'. Charlize Theron is good also, in one of her earlier roles.
Keanu Reeves. He was fine in places. And then there were other places. He's just not that good of an actor. Let's face it.
The visual style is gorgeous though. I loved the sets in some places, and the Gothic designs. Everything is dark and brooding- I really liked that aspect.
It's a little too long, but I did enjoy it. And when you come to the third act, it suddenly became want I wanted it to be.
It's a little bonkers at times, but I loved those bits more for it.
But I admittedly really enjoyed the different aspects of this, whether silly or over the top. There was just something charming there for me.
