Review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) by Osama A — 03 Apr 2011
A well made and effective thriller. An interesting blending of genres, mixing courtroom drama with a supernatural twist makes for a very unique film. First and foremost among its strengths is a terrific performance from Pacino as the Prince of Darkness.
He really steals the film. A strong supporting cast including Jones, Nelson and Theron all do their part, almost balancing out the awfulness of Keanu Reeves, who shouldn't even be allowed in the same state as a great actor like Pacino.
He is near his career worst here, and very nearly derails the entire movie. The pacing is another driving force here, starting out slowly and almost routinely, and builds more and more towards a very unsettling and creepy 3rd act.
Filmed quite well by Hackford, as he utilizes his lighting and sets very effectively. The CGI is kept to a minimum, but mixed in at just the right times, just enough to generate a few jumps and keep the veiwer on guard.
Despite Reeves best efforts to remove any respectablity, this one is definetly worth seeing.
