Review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) by Jay L — 31 Mar 2012
"Vanity..My Favorite Sin.".
The Devils Advocate is one hell of a gothic tale, a brain-churning and sexually charged film that's extremely gripping and truly disturbing. Director Taylor Hackford (Blood In Blood Out, An Officer And A Gentlemen) once again shows us a keen eye for detail and his unwavering ability to craft a furiously intricate film-going experience. A film that takes ahold of you from the very first scene and keeps you in it's grasp for the duration. The Devils Advocate is a faith-fueled and intensely gripping tour de force of devilish intensity that seriously screams originality. Taylor Hackford is a visionary, theres no doubt about that, he's crafted an intelligent, unflinching, controversial and bold film here, one that gets your attention quick. It's a psychologically maddening film, one that will get into your head and mess with the old ticker. The last sequence, I personally guarantee will blow your mind. The film was adapted from the famous Andrew Heffernan novel, and the pages of the book make the transition to the big screen with utter beauty, but devilish wickedness. There is truly no other film out there quite like The Devils Advocate.
Keanu Reeves is great as hotshot lawyer Kevin Lomax, it's one of his more memorable performances. Al Pacuni gives a brilliant performance as mogul John Milton, this is one of those roles that only Al Pacino could get right. Charlize Theron is brilliant in her own right as she gave an utterly brave and spectacular performance that you won't soon forget.
