Review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) by Brice B — 14 Oct 2010

Preachy and predictable at every turn, The Devil's Advocate tries to say a lot and says nothing. Some good cinematography and excellent acting - especially from the wonderful Al Pacino but also notably from Charlize Theron and Jeffrey Jones (Keanu Reeves is better than usual when he's calm and composed, but ludicrously over-the-top in his more emotional scenes) make it quite easy to wade through but at the end it's completely empty and annoyingly pretentious; the fact that the twist ending, maybe the only interesting thing in the whole film, is obvious when you first look at the poster, doesn't help.
